Back in 2007, while on tour, we embarked on recording a 5 song EP that was going to be called - The Receiving End of Sirens’ “Sounds of Sleep”.  The basic concept was to create and record a sonic landscape that mimicked the body’s transformation throughout the 5 stages of sleep, from awake into deep R.E.M sleep.  While writing we tried to keep in mind things like how the body would breathe, how the heart would beat,  and how the mind would be working in each phase.   Buried deep in the mix, we also added in the waveforms that your brain creates during each cycle.  In theory the CD would help bring the listener into a deeper more tranquil form of sleep.

At this time, I remember I was getting really into ambient music (i.e. Brian Eno) and the study of lucid dreaming.  This is where the seed was planted to write a soundtrack to sleep.

Although this project has yet to be finished, we were able to record 3 pretty good demos in miscellaneous hotel rooms, parking lots, and venues across the country.  To this day I will still go back and listen to this if I am having trouble sleeping and it seems to work every time.

Ultimately, we would have liked to have seen this released as a CD or flash drive with custom headphones, sleep mask and instruction manual.

This is Stage 1: ”A light sleep where you drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily. In this stage, the eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows. During this stage, many people experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling.”

We hope you enjoy!  Thoughts, theories, conjecture?
